Stormwater Management Essential To Prevent Flooding Of Built-up Areas And Pollution Of Natural Water Bodies

Stormwater management is required to reduce flooding from the runoff from rain, on streets and land surrounding living areas.

Stormwater can get absorbed in the soil, and help to replenish aquifers, but the fact that hard surfaces are present in most built-up areas, this capacity of absorption is reduced. This, in turn, causes the runoff to run across impervious surfaces and find its way into drains and sewers and if these are not able to deal with the amount of rain falling, the area will get flooded.

The stormwater often carries debris, eroded soil, and other pollutants that can find their way into wetlands, rivers, and lakes. A well-designed system for managing the stormwater will have detention ponds or other structures that will help in preventing the runoff that reaches natural sources from getting polluted. This can also help to control the stormwater and its release into disposal areas so that flooding is prevented.
