About Video Relay Services

The deaf, speech impaired, and hard of hearing all use video relay services to communicate with others remotely. This allows them to talk to others in real time with the assistance of a sign language interpreter. VRS is a standard service in the US thanks to relevant legislations that provide federal subsidies. Sweden and other European countries are also highly engaged in this initiative.

The Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA laid the groundwork for these services. The FCC was given the mandate to provide equal access to the phone network for disabled individuals. Aside from regulating the funds for VRS, the FCC also sets the standards for companies that are providing this service.

Calls of this nature must be handled in ethical and appropriate ways. For example, VRS providers must be able to operate 24/7 and maintain a high service level.
