Some of the most popular historical fiction has been created by the English writer Patrick O’Brian. During his long career, O’Brian has written short stories, children’s books and translated books from French to English. However, he is best known for his series of naval books set during the Napoleonic wars in early 19th century England, which didn’t bring O’Brian success until he was in his 70s. The books have been praised for their authentic period language, detailed descriptions of daily life and meticulous research. His first book in the series, featuring the character of Jack Aubrey, was made into a film in 2003 starring Russell Crowe. O’Brian’s popularity shows no signs of diminishing, and he has been favorably compared to other British authors such as C S Forester and Jane Austen. Patrick O’Brian died in 2000 and is buried in France.
