Wheelchairs need to be compact and light so that that they can be transported wherever necessary for its user. Chairs can be self-propelled or powered and can be of the folding variety.
Aluminium wheel chairs are favoured by many users because of their lightweight. Manufacturers cut down weight by having tubing of oval shapes, and reduce the weight further by welding the joints instead of using bolts and brackets. Carbon fibre frames are still lighter, but their high cost acts as a deterrent.
