The method of adding relief material, usually of the same clay-like nature of the biscuit, has been widely used in Northern Europe (Northern Germany and England) in ceramics known as slipware. For the painted decoration, special artifices have also been prepared which make the color assume a position detected on the surface of the decorated object or delicate items, such as Hand Painted Limoges.
It was used to define the lines of division of the decorations with a string impregnated with fatty substances which, by preventing colored glazes from adhering during cooking, made them withdraw.
By burning the cord, areas were left uncovered where the color would not have adhered due to the fatty substances. This allowed the decoration to maintain distinct margins, which play a vital role in the production of quality pieces. These units are available in various forms, including limoges.
