Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, can affect the sufferer to the point that quality of life is affected. However, there is hope for the long-term sufferer. Reflux surgery can be performed when other remedies have failed. Acid reflux is caused by stomach acid traveling into the esophagus; this surgery fixes that problem. The surgeon, either in a hands-on or laparoscopic procedure, wraps the top of the stomach around the lowest part of the patient’s esophagus, preventing stomach acid from traveling. This prevents severe heartburn and remains effective years after surgery. While some medications may still be needed, overall, the quality of life for heartburn sufferers is increased, resulting in greater enjoyment of life’s everyday activities. Being free of heartburn is a wonderful feeling. Food tastes even better since the sufferer no longer has to worry about the aftermath-severe heartburn. This surgery can change someone’s life for the better.
