Construction engineering focuses on designing, planning, building and managing things such as transportation infrastructure (railroads, airports, highways and bridges), dams, buildings and critical utilities.
Who are Construction Engineers?
Construction engineers may be considered as civil engineer/construction manager hybrids by some. They are required to learn the design elements of construction (which civil engineers focus on) and the project/site management elements of construction (which construction managers focus on). However, the actual nature of their tasks and which skillset they use will vary.
How to Enter the Industry
Aspiring construction engineers will need a major in subject area and may read for the Professional Engineering (PE) exam to gain certification. Once trained, the professional will be open to project opportunities in the following areas:
– Building (normally commercial building which includes homes and businesses).
– Heavy/Highway (these cover wastewater and water treatment plants, bridges, airports and highways).
– Mechanical (installing plumbing, ventilation, heating and cooling systems)
– Electrical (manage electrical systems during construction)
Job prospects for engineers in this field are expected to rise as communities expand and underdeveloped areas attempt to catch up with their more developed counterparts.
