Policies and guidelines for mental health in Australia are overseen by the Australian Government’s Department of Health. Their goal is to ensure that citizens have access to information, resources and quality care for mental disabilities and diseases. They are also responsible for setting up and running many programs to aid families and individuals coping with mental illness.
For example, the department has a National Youth Mental Foundation to assist kids and teens who are struggling with anxiety and depression. They also run programs on suicide prevention, eating disorders and support groups for those recovering from a mental illness. For those who live in rural or remote areas, there is also a program to assist mental health patients living there. In addition, the government offers a Mental Health Nurse Incentive Programme to help fund medical care and psychiatric services in various communities.
