There are many fascinating places to visit in Jaisalmer, which makes a convenient base for exploring parts of western Rajasthan. Not to be missed is the Jaisalmer Fort, which seems to blend in with the surrounding desert, and is home to shops and hotels. The city has several spectacular temples; among the highlights are the Patwon Ki Haveli with its elaborate carvings, and the Jain temples, some of which date back to the 12th century. Gadisar Lake was created in the 14th century and has become an important pilgrimage site as well as a tourist attraction, and the Jaisalmer War Museum honors those killed in many 20th century conflicts. Outside the city, the Akal Wood fossil park has the remains of over 20 ancient fossilized trees, and a visit to the Desert national Park offers the chance to see rare animals such as the Great Indian Bustard.
