Hazardous Area Lighting is one of the things you do not normally think about in your work setting. There are regulations that govern the lighting that engineers and contractors do think about before you set foot into your workplace.
One of the rules that govern is based around flammable gases or vapors. Flammable gases need special lighting provisions that protect the fixtures from the gasses or vapors igniting from sparks that could cause an explosion.
Another is based on dust and airborne filaments in the air. Some factories that produce airborne dust and filaments also need protected lighting fixtures. The laws that govern both these types of potentially hazardous lighting conditions include special lighting fixtures and adequate ventilation for the facilities.
The traditional hazardous lighting we may think about is task lighting. In areas that potential hazard working areas may exist there are regulations about the amount of illumination needed to make sure the workers can see clearly what they are working on. Factories that stamp, cut, roll, assemble metals, fabrics, plastics are held to these regulations.
