The land tensure system is part of the common law system. Herein it’s the legal regime whereby land is owned by someone, who’s said to “hold” the land. This is done to determine who is able to use the land, for how long they can use it, and under what conditions this use is permitted.
There are essentially four general categories of land tenure institutions that operate throughout the world today. These consist of customary land tenure, private ownership, tenancy, and state ownership.
Land tenure is beneficial in that it helps establish the rights of land ownership by farmers. This is done in order to help farmers create a link between cultivators and their government. With the land tenure system in place ownership of the land becomes more secure and permanent. This is something that’s very important to agricultural development.
