What Is A Power Training Program?

A power training program, also called high speed strength, has the goal of moving a large load at high speed. It is often associated with weight lifting (particularly power lifting) but this type of training program includes many other disciplines including, for example, medicine ball manipulation, jumping and other exercises whose focus is on the speed with which a weight can be moved.

Power training is a performance based practice that focuses on the number of times a participant can repeat a given exercise and the speed with which they do so. It is complementary to strength training, which provides stability and overall strength, but also increases the rate of muscle fiber use. Power training calls for extended rest periods between exercises to allow the body to recover. This training program can help participants to vary their exercise regime and to maximize their efforts in creating a functional exercise plan.
